Concrete Specialist Project at The Golden Hind, London
The iconic Golden Hind, in central London, is a national treasure. Located on the banks of the River Thames, it attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. McGrath Civils were contracted to carry out urgent works to protect the integrity of walls around the hull of the ship, within its mooring. A reinforced concrete wall was required to be built using sika waterproof concrete.
The concreting and works were extremely urgent and we only had 4 weeks from start to finish to complete the project.

We were contracted to construct the reinforced concrete wall surrounding the hull of the ship.
The main challenge of the job was the tight time schedule of just 4 weeks. If the ship had lain dry for any longer, it would have compromised the integrity of ships lining.
The limited space around the hull meant that an unusual amount of manpower was required as all materials had to be hand-balled in and out of the dock. There was no room for a compound on the site.
A catchment area had to be built within to shot blast and treat the previous sheet piles. Shot blasting was carried out using glass to avoid polluting the Thames.
A one sided reinforced concrete wall was cast in front of the sheet piles using a sika waterproof concrete and sika hydrophilic strip in all joints.
