Why groundworks are so important in any construction project
We’ve lost count of the number of times our clients have asked us “why are groundworks so important in my build?” when contacting us. We meet hundreds of new prospective clients each year and the term groundwork is often misunderstood.
The term groundworks encompasses a number of different core processes on a building site, which include:
- Site investigation – It’s important every site is checked thoroughly for any contamination, dangerous past land uses, stability and any likely problems that may be encountered on site during the build.
- Demolition and clearance – In some instances an existing dwelling or building may be required to be demolished and cleared. In a basement project, many tonnes of soil and earth are required to be excavated and removed from the site
- Ground stabilisation – Waterproofing, foundations and footings are required in every build and in lots of cases, and especially in new basement projects, retaining walls are required to counteract the force of ground loads next to the basement. (link to retaining wall content)
- Site services – drainage systems, water, electricity and any cabling must all be considered at this stage of the build and necessary tunneling systems devised and dug
- Landscaping – Understandably, many clients are keen to landscape their properties during the latter stages of construction projects. Re-shaping and re-modelling of both earthworks and hard landscapes may be required, depending on the project
This is not an exhaustive list, there are many other factors to consider when thinking about why groundworks are so important in any construction project. If you have any questions relating to groundworks, we will be happy to speak to you, your architect or project manager.

Project type: Basement Construction Location: Notting Hill Nice progress on a project we’ve been involved with in Notting Hill, over the past few weeks. The scheme is a big one, 3 large houses being converted into 44 flats, and our role has been delivering the reduced dig basement, drainage works (including the attenuation tank) and the new concrete slab. Tight access, busy location and plenty to coordinate, but the site team have done a great job keeping everything moving and tidy on site. Always satisfying seeing the groundwork stages come together and setting the project up for the next trades. Thinking about a new reduced dig Basement in London? At McGrath Civils, we take pride in delivering high-quality civil engineering solutions across London and the Home Counties. One of our recent projects demonstrates just how important careful groundwork is when creating a new home. We’ve just finished working on a new residential property in Clapham, one of London’s most sought-after areas. This site is set to host a modern, spacious home, and our team were tasked with laying the ground beams and drainage systems, two critical components that ensure the property’s stability and longevity. Why Ground Beams Matter Ground beams are a key part of a building’s foundation. They distribute the weight of the structure evenly across the soil, helping prevent movement and cracking over time. Without properly designed and installed ground beams, even a well-built home can face structural issues down the line. The Role of Drainage Equally important is a robust drainage system. Proper drainage protects the property from water damage, prevents flooding, and ensures the surrounding soil remains stable. In a residential area like Clapham, effective drainage is essential to safeguard both the home and neighbouring properties. Delivering Quality, Every Step of the Way Our team approached this project with precision and attention to detail, completing the ground beams and installing a reliable drainage system. By combining experience with the right equipment and techniques, we ensure the foundations are solid, safe, and built to last. At McGrath Civils, we know that the success of any new build starts beneath the surface. Whether it’s basements, ground beams, or drainage systems, our team is committed to providing the highest standards of civil engineering for every project. It’s been a good couple of weeks on our Wimbledon basement project. The basement is for a large block of flats, and the first step of the new-build project. The project started in March 2025. We’ve continued building the walls up to ground-floor level, pushing on nicely from foundation stage. The ground's been dug out, blinded, and we’ve laid the Cellcore insulation, helping manage ground heave and future-proofing the slab. The steel was tied and drop beams formed, before concreting more of the base slab. Quality work and tidy finish from the team. On to the next stage! McGrath Civils have many years of experience in basement construction, working on large projects like this in Wimbledon as well as more modest garden basements for private customers all over the South of England. It’s been a busy start to 2025 at McGrath Civils. We've been working on a groundworks and RC project over in Northampton, where we've been helping an M&E company with sub-station works on a new solar farm. Some of the fantastic aerial shots we've taken give an idea of the size of this project. We have lots of experience in working with infrastructure and M&E companies, and have worked on multiple projects over the last few years and dozens over the last 20 years. If you or your clients would like to speak to us about helping out with a project involving solar farm groundworks, anywhere across the South of England or Midlands, then get in touch.
