A raft foundation, or a mat foundation as it is also commonly referred to, is a large concrete slab that is spread across the entire footprint of the building. 

A raft foundation is commonly used when the soil profile of a particular site is unstable and therefore the concrete slab allows the load to be spread across the entire footprint of the site, rather than over smaller areas (as is common with individual footings) or at certain points of the site (which is common with piled foundations).
