We’ve recently started work on a new project in Lymington, in the New Forest, where we are using the Velox insulated concrete formwork (ICF) system.

I was catching up with the team over at our Notting Hill project this week, with the slab prep well underway.

This scheme will see three substantial properties converted into 44 flats, with reduced-dig basement works forming part of the programme.

Sand blinding is all installed, DPM laid and reinforcement fixed, ready for the pour. Good progress and tidy work from the team.

Nice progress on a project we’ve been involved with in Notting Hill, over the past few weeks.

The scheme is a big one, 3 large houses being converted into 44 flats, and our role has been delivering the reduced dig basement, drainage works (including the attenuation tank) and the new concrete slab.

Tight access, busy location and plenty to coordinate, but the site team have done a great job keeping everything moving and tidy on site.

Always satisfying seeing the groundwork stages come together and setting the project up for the next trades.

Build Method: Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF)

Location: Weybridge, Surrey

McGrath Civils were brought in to construct the structural shell of a rear extension at a residential property in Weybridge, using Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF). The extension sits tight to the existing house, so the build needed to be accurate, efficient and robust, while keeping disruption on site to a minimum.

ICF was chosen as it allowed the structure and insulation to be built at the same time, creating a strong, energy-efficient shell quickly and reliably.

Work carried Out

The team delivered the full ICF structure, including:

Setting out and installing the ICF wall system
Forming window and door openings accurately within walls
Installing reinforcement steel throughout the structure
Coordinating the concrete pour to create the structural core
Tying the new extension into the existing property

The photos of the project below show the ICF walls built up to roof level, with reinforcement in place and openings formed cleanly, ready for the next stage of the build.

Basement Works Progressing Well in Virgina Water

Good progress on site over in Virginia Water, where the team are delivering a basement as part of an ongoing residential project.

The basement walls have now been poured to first height, allowing the temporary retaining steels to be safely removed. This marks an important milestone on the job and means the structure is really starting to take shape.

As with all basement projects, careful sequencing and temporary works management are key. The team have done a great job getting this stage completed safely and efficiently, keeping the programme moving forward.

Wimbledon Basement Update

We're in Wimbledon, creating a new basement for a large block of flats

It’s been a good couple of weeks on our Wimbledon basement project.

The basement is for a large block of flats, and the first step of the new-build project. The project started in March 2025.

We’ve continued building the walls up to ground-floor level, pushing on nicely from foundation stage. The ground's been dug out, blinded, and we’ve laid the Cellcore insulation, helping manage ground heave and future-proofing the slab.

The steel was tied and drop beams formed, before concreting more of the base slab. Quality work and tidy finish from the team. On to the next stage!

We have started a new basement project in Thames Ditton in London

We are delighted to have started work on a new basement project, in Thames Ditton, just a stones throw from the banks of the River Thames.

The project comprises of building 2 basements, for a new development.

We have been breaking down piles to form a capping beam and will start excavating the site over the coming weeks. Once we get into the summer, the team will be installing the formwork and pouring the concrete slab, which will allow us to start the walls.

Basement Project in Wimbledon

We're in Wimbledon, creating a new basement for a large block of flats

We are pleased to have started a new basement project in Wimbledon, South-West London in 2025.

The basement is for a large block of flats, and the first step of the new-build project. The project started in March 2025.

The team have broken down piles and installed the capping beam, dug out half the site and are now installing the steel reinforcement including a deep sump for a drainage pump. We're currently installing Cellcore insulation under the majority of the slab to combat any ground movement.

Once we get into May, the team will be installing the steam and the form shutter around the sump so we can then pour concrete to the slab, which will allow us to start the walls on the first half of the project.

All systems go in Wimbledon!

It’s been a busy December at McGrath Civils!

One of our basement projects in Oxford is coming to end. The team have now poured the ground floor slab, and just in time for Christmas!

This has been a really challenging basement, due to the very tight access and the fact that it's set in the middle of the water table but we're delighted with the result and hats off to everyone involved on the project so far.

We're Specialist ICF Contractors

It’s been another busy month at McGrath Civils! I’ve been over in High Wycombe this week, with one of our teams that are working on an ICF project for a private client.

The team have carefully designed and built the topek decking system, installed the rebar including the penetrations for roof lights and are then overseeing the 75m3 pour this week. We’re also now installing the up-stand walls for skylights and solar panels, so it’s all systems go over there!

One of the groundworks teams at McGrath Civils have been working in the borough of Kingston upon Thames this month (February 2024), helping a commercial customer with a concrete slab and groundworks at the side of their factory in Chessington.

Our customer specialise in the manufacture and installation of bespoke windows and doors across London, and are expanding their factory and operation. We were pleased to be able to prepare the site and lay the slab for them, ready for the superstructure and next phase of their project.

The team poured 70m3 of concrete for the slab and the client was delighted with the job.

We have been working over near High Wycombe this month (January 2024), helping a private customer with their new ICF luxury residential build, including a basement.

ICF is an interesting and innovative construction method, using extremely lightweight expanded polystyrene and concrete. This was a good sized project but despite this we were only required to

pour 30m3 of concrete due to the nature of the insulated formwork/polystyrene walls.

It’s been a hectic few months at McGrath Civils, with a few basement projects coming to an end in Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Surrey. The Autumn has been no different, with several projects just now ready to kick-off.

New Basement in Cambridge

Our basement project over on the luxury Wentworth Estate is starting to come along very nicely.

The Wentworth Estate in Surrey is a private estate, that is home to very large luxury properties, often all with completely bespoke designs. This project we're currently working on is for another large property with several thousand square foot of living space - it's going to be something very special!

The team have almost finished applying the external waterproof membrane, so we're almost ready for backfilling.

Our Virginia Water Basement project is really starting to take shape. It's going to be some property, of real quality and design.

The basement team have done a fantastic job in laying the second half of the slab to the basement this week. We've been working hard, albeit in difficult conditions and it's really starting to progress.

We've been working on a new project for the last month, building a basement in Barnet as part of a new residential project there.

It's been a hectic couple of months at McGrath Civils, with a number of projects coming to an end and several basements about to start in Q1 of 2022.

This was a small basement in Oxford (not the best picture), which was a great project to be involved with, especially as we managed to get it finished just before Christmas, on behalf of a developer who is building a one-off luxury property. Passivhaus Basement Update - Mega Basement taking shape

After excavating down 10m, our mega-basement Passivhaus project is really starting to take shape.

The team have installed 250mm of insulation and a GDA Active Waterproofing membrane, for the underside of the concrete and the drainage channels are looking fine.

It's quite a sight when you're standing at the bottom!

Retaining Walls – What are they and why are they important?

A Retaining Wall can be defined as a structure that is erected to retain a material behind it, most commonly soil. Retaining walls are designed to counteract the force of a grounds load, either via the walls individual mass or by an anchoring system.

Retaining walls are used in all types of construction, including in residential and commercial sectors, as well as sea and river defence.

Are there different types of Retaining Walls?

Yes, there are several types of retaining walls, commonly used in construction in the UK.

Some of the most common types of retaining wall systems include:

Cantilevered Retaining Wall

One of the most common retaining wall designs used in the UK uses a cantilevered design. Usually made from reinforced concrete, they rely on the basic principles of leverage.

Gravity Retaining Wall

A gravity retaining wall relies on a large mass to resist the thrust and pressure from the material load so is commonly constructed using materials such as poured concrete, stone or masonry.

Sheet Piling Retaining Wall

Reinforced concrete or steel sheet piles are driven into the ground to provide support to retaining walls. They are typically used in underground structures including basements, car parks and sea defence (river embankments and sea walls).

Why are Retaining Walls so important?

Soil collapse can cause catastrophic damage to a home or commercial property, which is why retaining walls are so important. It is vital to any build that the walls are built correctly and calculated to withstand load and pressure.

For example, retaining walls are vital in basement construction. Once a site has been excavated, groundworks prepared, the walls of any basement structure must withstand a huge amount of pressure which is exerted by the surrounding materials, usually soil, over a long period of time.

Can I build a Retaining Wall myself?

If you intend to build a wall over 1 metre in height, it’s vital you instruct a team of experts to advise you. A structural engineer and a team of builders who specialise in retaining walls is recommended.

Why groundworks are so important in any construction project

We’ve lost count of the number of times our clients have asked us “why are groundworks so important in my build?” when contacting us. We meet hundreds of new prospective clients each year and the term groundwork is often misunderstood.

The term groundworks encompasses a number of different core processes on a building site, which include:

Site investigation – It’s important every site is checked thoroughly for any contamination, dangerous past land uses, stability and any likely problems that may be encountered on site during the build.

Demolition and clearance – In some instances an existing dwelling or building may be required to be demolished and cleared. In a basement project, many tonnes of soil and earth are required to be excavated and removed from the site

Ground stabilisation – Waterproofing, foundations and footings are required in every build and in lots of cases, and especially in new basement projects, retaining walls are required to counteract the force of ground loads next to the basement. (link to retaining wall content)

Site services – drainage systems, water, electricity and any cabling must all be considered at this stage of the build and necessary tunneling systems devised and dug
